 The Venerable ACR

The ACR is the most recognized and recognizable slugthrower of the Imperium, however its description and capabilities have differed considerably in various editions and formats. So what is an ACR and where does the term come from? ACR, or Advanced Combat Rifle is a term used primarily to designate the newest advanced slugthrower in any military arsenal. Since the M-16 was introduced there have been several. OICW, AAI, HK-G11, Steyr AUG, M-4, and the M-8 were all parts of or referred to as the ACR or an ACR at some point. There were others too. The original idea was, after Vietnam the US armed forces wanted to double the effectiveness of the average soldier. That program failed and was terminated in the late 80s, but the term stuck. Marc and company liked the term and used it. In Traveller it has generally considered to be a blanket term that means some version of a battle rifle with best in class capabilities. The Imperium buys hundreds of billions at a whack across 11,000 worlds. So probably not from the same cobsortium. So this is a class of weapons and not a single model but IMTU it always has some baseline characteristics.

IMTU the ACR is as follows:

The Advanced Combat Rifle is the most popular primary weapon of Imperium forces without energy weapons. Arms with similar capabilities are used by Humaniti and other races across Charted Space. The ACR is an ambidextrous bullpup configuration system firing caseless ammunition. The weapon is capable of single shot, burst firing, and fully automatic fire. Standard magazines hold sixty rounds. The weapon has sighting that includes enhanced optical, laser, thermal, and other sensors and is accessible directly, by HUD, or by neural interface. A bipod and accessory lug are integrated into the weapon. Laser sighting can also function as a designator for artillery and other systems. The weapon can be fired from the trigger or electronically. The ACR can be stabilized by a gyroscopic system that improves low gravity and burst accuracy but it can be disabled if needed. The most common addition is the multipurpose grenade launcher, although the top and bottom accessory rails allow for a range of options.
